This Sunday's Reading Reflection
(Matthew 22: 15-21)
In this Sunday's Gospel reading, when Jesus asks the Pharisees to tell him whose image was engraved on the coin owed for the census tax, he uses it to teach a lesson about the image that should be engraved upon our hearts. Our hearts should belong to God and to God alone. The Romans believed that their emperors were divine. Therefore, to possess Roman coins meant carrying
around the graven image of a human god.
The Pharisees knew this when they challenged Jesus. Paying the census tax to Caesar symbolized more than just submission to a foreign government. It had religious connotations. If Jesus was a true prophet, he should speak up against Jews possessing pagan coins. If he was a true messiah, he should deliver them from the oppression and taxes of the foreign government - or so they thought.
We don't know how they happened to have the Roman coin that they showed to Jesus. If they pulled it out of their own purses, which is likely, it revealed their hypocrisy. However, Jesus wasn't just interested in exposing their hypocrisy; he wanted to make a point about the True Messiah.
If we belong to God, Jesus is engraved upon our hearts. We have been rescued from the destruction of sin by the Messiah. We have let him deliver us
from the oppression of evil that was caused by our sins.
Whose image do others see when they look at your life?
When people see you, do they see Jesus engraved upon you?
To the extent that they do, that's
the extent to which you belong to the kingdom of God!

October: The Month of the Holy Rosary
Since the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary takes place on October 7, the Catholic Church dedicates the entire month of October to the Holy Rosary.
The word rosary comes from the Latin word rosarium, which means a crown or a garland of roses. As the Blessed Virgin Mary has revealed to a number of people, each time we pray a Hail Mary, it is as if we're handing her a beautiful rose; therefore, each complete rosary makes a crown of roses for her.
The Holy Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because within it lies the awesome story of our salvation. With the Rosary we meditate upon the mysteries of joy, sorrow, glory, and light of Jesus and Mary. It reminds us that Mary is still closely joined to her son, Jesus.
The traditional fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary were finalized by the sixteenth century and grouped into three sets: the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, the Glorious Mysteries. In 2002, Saint John Paul II, when he was the pope, announced the new Luminous Mysteries.
Catholics are invited to observe the Month of the Holy Rosary in a variety of ways. Some suggestions offered by different sources are:
1. If you don't already do this, set aside a time every day to pray the rosary, or pray the rosary with your family (even just a decade together, even just one family member). Let each person share an intention they'd like the family to pray for.
2. Read and meditate the scripture from which each mystery comes.
3. Add Rosary-inspired prayers at different moments throughout the day. For example, a Hail Mary after grace before meals; or a lesser known Rosary-associated prayer, such as the Hail Holy Queen or the Fatima Prayer.
4. Surround yourself with art and music that celebrates our Blessed Mother Mary.
5. Set up a small space in your home, complete with statues, flowers, and candles dedicated to praying the rosary.
6. Share the Rosary with others. Give a rosary to a friend or family member going through a difficult time; make a rosary to give as a gift to someone; donate rosaries to hospitals or nursing homes for Catholic patients who might benefit from them.
. . .any many other ways to honor Mother Mary through your prayerful and loving actions.
